Ages 5^-8. Although plenty of takeoffs on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" exist, this tit-for-tat version is lots of silly fun. It begins after naughty Goldilocks has eaten the porridge, broken the chairs, slept on the beds, and left. When Baby Bear spies Goldilocks entering a cottage in the woods, the bear family decides to give Goldy a little of her own medicine. After she leaves the cottage, they enter, making themselves at home and deliberately leaving a terrible mess. Imagine their surprise when Goldilocks returns, finds them, and informs them, "This isn't my house. . . . I only came back because I left my teddy bear." The identity of the real owner of the house is a delightful and appropriate surprise. Williamson's pictures are colorful, joyful, and messy--perfectly depicting the glorious havoc left by the uninvited guests. Stephanie Zvirin
