9781589633988: A Family Without a Name: Leader of the Resistance

Two sons of an infamous French Canadian traitor, fight for the revolution during the 1837-38 Revolt of the "Patriots" in an effort to make up for their father's crime. Sometimes unfaithful to historical facts in this major historical novel, Verne, a liberal ideologist, considers with favor the major national uprisings of the 19th century, although he also dreams of a Québec freely associated with the great American Republic.

There is a fundamental mistake in dividing Verne's works into science fiction vs. non-science fiction --in Verne's work there is an all-encompassing vision of science, progress, society and political struggles, which it is not convenient to compartmentalize.

From the Publisher:

" We pity the poor creatures who are flying at each other's throats for the sake of a few acres of ice." So said the philosophers at the end of the eighteenth century, referring to Canada, for whose possession the French and English were then at strife.

The few acres of ice now form a Dominion, with an area larger than that of Europe.

In the year of 1534 a Frenchman, Jacques Cartier, landed, and took possession of this vast territory.

A few facts, a few dates, will suffice us to trace the progress of this important state from its foundation to the period between 1830 and 1840, in which the events recorded in this history took place.

About the Author:

Jules Gabriel Verne was born in 1828, in Nantes, France. Jules' parents were of a seafaring tradition, one factor that influenced his writings. As a boy, Jules Verne ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for theatre grew. Later in 1850, Jules Verne's first play was published. His father was outraged when he heard that Jules was not going to continue law, so he discontinued the money he was giving him to pay for his expenses in Paris. This forced Verne to make money by selling his stories.

After spending many hours in Paris libraries studying geology, engineering, and astronomy, Jules Verne published his first novel "Five Weeks in a Balloon." Soon he started writing novels such as "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "From the Earth to the Moon," and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

For books filled with exotic places and great adventures, spend some time with Jules Verne.
