About the Author
Gordon A. Cotton lives in the ancestral home where he was born at Yokena, Mississippi, south of Vicksburg. He is a seventh-generation Mississippian with family roots in the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama. Cotton earned both B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Mississippi College. For eight years, he taught in schools within the Vicksburg area and later served as a reporter and photographer for the Vicksburg Evening Post, for which he still writes a weekly history column. Since 1976, he has been director/curator of the Old Court House Museum in Vicksburg, Mississippi. His book Vicksburg and the War, which he coauthored with Jeff T. Giambrone, is an illustrated volume of history on the Civil War and covers events such as the siege of Vicksburg and its military occupation, circumstances that have been widely ignored by historians. His documentation of the cityís feelings about secession and the war is especially valuable. Gordon A. Cotton is a member of the First Families of Mississippi, the Davis Family Association, and the Mississippi Historical Society, and he is a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church. His hobbies include carpentry, research, and restoration of old cemeteries.
