B01
Grade 9 Up-While Napoleon accomplished much during his reign, and his contributions still influence France, he was not flawless. The Napoleonic Wars focuses on his defeats, caused in large part by his egotism and refusal to listen to others. Streissguth discusses his subject's military career from his leap to prominence at Toulon (1793) through his final attempt at Waterloo (1815). Most of the book focuses on five military failures-Egypt, Spain, Russia, Leipzig, and Waterloo-plus the "economic war" of the Continental System. There are many illustrations, maps, numerous footnotes, a highly abbreviated chronology, and an annotated bibliography and list for further reading. For the most part, Streissguth writes smoothly, but there are some inconsistencies and unclear sentences. Nothing else is available for teens specifically on Napoleon's military leadership (or lack thereof). Leslie McGuire's Napoleon (Chelsea, 1987) and Bob Carroll's Napoleon Bonaparte (Lucent, 1994) are both standard biographies that review his entire life.
