9781590181843: World History Series - The Iran-Iraq War

The Iran-Iraq War was one of the longest and most destructive wars of the twentieth century. Global interest in the Middle East and dependence upon oil supplies from the Persian Gulf led to widespread and intense international interest in the war, which coincided with a rise in Islamic militancy and political instability in the region.

From Booklist:

Gr. 5-8. This informative entry in the World History series discusses the Iran-Iraq War, the longest continuous war between two countries in the twentieth century. Beginning with an overview of the historical tensions between Persian, Shi'a Iran and Arab, Sunni Iraq, Schaffer moves on to the Iraqi invasion of the Shatt al Arab, an important strip of land bordering the Persian Gulf. Focusing on the personal war between Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeni, Schaffer quotes extensively from primary and secondary sources to give readers a solid introduction to both leaders. In sidebars, the book also examines such concepts as jihad and chemical weapons and looks closely at American support of both sides in the war. The only disappointment here is the illustrations. Grainy (and sometimes blurred) black-and-white reproductions of photographs do little to liven the text-heavy layout. Still, kids looking for background into contemporary Middle East conflicts will do well to start here. An extensive bibliography, a list of further readings, and a glossary are appended. John Green
