A bestselling author explores the bonds of family love in an intriguing tale of romance
Fourth-grade schoolteacher Amanda Huntington said good-bye to her high school sweetheart when she realized he had fallen in love with someone else. Now, a year later, she wonders if she’ll spend the rest of her life alone. When she meets Blake Simmons, Amanda finds her life turned upside down. Blake doesn’t seem like the knight in shining armor she always imagined. With two adorable children in his care, he is locked in an ugly battle of wills with their troubled mother and worries that the children he has come to love will be lost to him forever. Will Amanda’s relationship with Blake and the children only cause her more heartache? Or does she need him, just as much as he needs her?

Rachel Ann Nunes (pronounced noon-esh) began writing in the seventh grade and is now the author of nineteen books, including the popular Ariana series and the picture book Daughter of a King, voted Best Children’s Book of the Year 2003 by the Association of independent LDS Booksellers. She and her husband, TJ, are the parents of six children, and she believes that raising her family is the most important thing she will ever do.
In this contemporary romance from Nunes, the author of 19 books for the LDS market, sweet scenes, good characterizations and an agreeable story line help overcome predictable moments. Likable fourth-grade teacher Amanda Huntington is recovering from a failed romance and feels her biological clock ticking. She finds new love literally knocking at her door in the form of the "ruggedly handsome" stove repairman Blake Simmons. He comes with a ready-made family of four-year-old Kevin and baby Mara, whose mother is in prison. When the mother is released and tries to claim the children, Nunes explores important issues of family, addiction and true love as Blake and Amanda seek to find what is best for the kids—and for themselves. Kevin is well portrayed as a little boy who cares about his mother, fiercely protects his sister and longs for stability. However, Nunes succumbs to cliché, with Amanda watching Blake "surreptitiously through lowered lashes" and with lines like "if he reached out and touched her, a fire would burst into existence and burn down the whole house." Blake's stubborn refusal to share simple information about his schooling with Amanda also becomes frustrating. Mormon readers will appreciate the emphasis on family values and the absence of sexual situations beyond some chaste kissing. (Feb.)
