This is an anthology of articles authored by Jacob Katz, most of which have been translated from his two volumes of collected studies in Hebrew Halakhah and Kabbala (1984) and Halakhah in Straits (1992). The focus of this collection is the Halakhah, the system of law that both molded Jewish life and was molded by it during the medieval period and, to a certain extent, in modern times. By following the concrete cases, one can gain insight into the strengths of this oldest continuously functioning system of jurisprudence and its limitations, especially today, as it struggles to adopt to modern conditions when the Jewish people as a whole no longer follow its precepts. About half of the collection deals with the Middle Ages and the other half with the modern period. Some of the articles concentrate upon the personalities whose activity in the field of Halakhah proved to be highly significant. The late Jacob Katz was a professor at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a laureate of 1980 Israel Prize. He was recognized as one· of the most outstanding scholars and taught generations of Jewish historians. His wide ranging studies in medieval and modern Jewish history have become classics in the field.
