Late evening is a special time for animals. As light begins to disappear behind distant mountains, many animals seek safe places to sleep. Others are just now starting to hunt, helped by the fading light. Nightfall is the hour of predators stalking their prey. It is also a time when the sun paints the sky in brilliant colors. And it is a time when some of the busiest animals go about their tasks - beavers are among the most fun to watch. Writer/photographer team Ron Hirshi and Thomas Mangelsen have spent many years observing and recording the activities of wildlife, as they go about their days and nights. They invite you to get to know the animals of nightfall, at the time when you are about to sleep.

Ages 6-8. Spectacular color photographs and simple text introduce nature's beauty and wildlife behavior that is unique to day or night. As the sun rises, so do birds, deer, and bears; as water and rocks warm, cold-blooded creatures like lizards begin their days. Night follows morning with glorious sunset shots and a few facts describing the activities of nocturnal wildlife, including coyotes, raccoons, and otters. The simple, often poetic prose ("When the earth is drenched in the first rays of warm sun, and the last dark shadows of night disappear. . . ") is easy to follow, and the creatures pictured in the photos are identified by name. Diverse activities are presented, though the focus is on hunting and feeding habits. Afterwords clarify some general animal behavior. Used together, the books offer an eloquent ode to nature and many familiar inhabitants. Shelle Rosenfeld
