This book describes a new theory of the origin and purpose of consciousness, and binds together all abstract thought in history into a coherent framework. Then it presents a model for explaining the binding problem via glial cells (and the physics of time), which necessarily interface with and affect neuron function. Further, and most importantly, a powerful new methodology for getting real useful information about consciousness is presented by using probabilities and the analysis of meaning. Many examples are presented from years of doing this new method.

From the Author:

Here I present a theory of consciousness, the universe, meaning, and coincidences. There is a thread that runs through all of them. the glue that binds brains (in consciousness), the universe (unity and symmetry of natural law and forms), and linguistic meaning (lines on a paper we call "words" refer to and bind vast amounts of prior information combined with information about the future together for meaning). A scientific methodology for investigating synchronistic meaningful events is presented as a way of compiling evidence for this overriding factor in the universe working in our daily lives. I give examples from years of careful observations of these effects. This book offers solutions for the "binding problem" of brain science and the larger "binding problem" of the amassed knowledge of life and civilizations over so many years.

About the Author:

In 1990, he moved to Georgia and spent four years in the PhD program in Behavioral Neuroscience at Emory University in Atlanta. He taught experimental methodology there, and has long been interested in the philosophy of science. In 1993, Steven and Meagan were married. Later, he transferred to the University of Memphis program in psychobiology to finish his dissertation work. In 1995, he left school to work on this book. In 1996, and in 1997 his two sons Elijah and Noah were born in Memphis. He then began working for FedEx at night and taking care of the kids during the day. In 1998 the family moved to Knoxville, TN where Steve continued his work with fedex at the Knoxville airport and finished most of the work on the book there. Also while in Knoxville, the author travelled around the world presenting these ideas at various conferences and met with his first successes. This is his first book.
