The incredible stories of twenty-two lone survivors of maritime disasters are presented in this collection of war and peacetime incidents. The dramatic accounts--including those of a British sailor who survived 133 days at sea on an open raft and a German sailor who spent 28 hours in the ocean without a life preserver are based on a wide array of sources, including interviews with the survivors and their families and official records to back up their accuracy. Most took place in World War II, when the navies and merchant fleets of many nations roamed the seas. The World War II destroyer was a splendid ship if its speed and maneuverability were in the hands of a capable captain. Such a man is Captain Alden Sorenson who assumes command of the USS Carson, which steams into the South Pacific in 1943 to support the fast carrier operations and the allied landings on New Guinea and Morotai. With the crew of the Carson, the reader will watch closely for the subtle wakes of torpedoes in the night-time waters or brace for fierce air attacks by Japanese Zekes.
About the Author:
James E. Wise Jr., a former naval aviator, intelligence officer, and Vietnam veteran, retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain. His books include Stars in Blue and U-505, among many others.
