Targeted Training for Solving SE Exam Multiple-Choice Problems
Six-Minute Solutions for Structural Engineering (SE) Exam Morning Breadth Problems contains 90 multiple-choice problems representative of the format and knowledge areas of the morning breadth exams for lateral and vertical forces. Problems present a range of SE breadth exam topics, including structural analysis of bridges and buildings, design and detailing of structures, and construction administration. Lateral force problems focus on wind and earthquake loads, while vertical force problems address loads due to gravity. Six-Minute Solutions includes hints that provide problem-solving guidance when you need it. Each solution describes common errors so you can avoid choosing incorrect answers. You’ll learn accurate and efficient solving methods by reviewing each problem’s comprehensive, step-by-step solution. Solutions also frequently reference the SE exam codes and standards to help familiarize you with the references you’ll use on exam day.
Due to the changes in codes for the NCEES SE exam, there are some updates to this edition. Though not all of PPI's products reflect the adopted editions of the new design standards, in most cases the principles change very little. While specific procedures, equations, or values may change gradually from one edition of a design or reference standard to the next, PPI’s books continue to provide an appropriate overview of the concepts presented, and will prepare you for the upcoming exams.

THIS BOOK’S ORGANIZATION
Six-Minute Solutions for Structural Engineering (SE) Exam Morning Breadth Problems is organized into two sections: vertical forces and lateral forces. These sections correspond to the vertical and lateral forces breadth (morning) portions of the SE exam and are further divided into three subtopics: analysis of structures, design and detailing of structures, and construction administration. These subtopics correlate with the topics given in the NCEES SE exam specifications.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
In Six-Minute Solutions for Structural Engineering (SE) Exam Morning Breadth Problems, each problem statement, with its supporting information and answer choices, is presented in the same format as the problems encountered on the SE breadth exam. However, unlike on the exam, each problem in this book includes a hint to provide direction in solving the problem. Each solution is presented in a step-by-step sequence to help you follow the logical development of the problem’s solving approach and to provide examples of how you may want to solve similar problems on the SE exam.
In addition to the correct solution, you will find an explanation of the faulty solutions leading to the three incorrect answer choices. The incorrect solutions are intended to represent common mistakes made when solving each type of problem. These may be simple mathematical errors, such as failing to square a term in an equation, or more serious errors, such as using the wrong equation.
Solutions presented for each problem may represent only one of several methods for obtaining a correct answer. Although most of the problems in this book have unique solutions, alternative problem-solving methods may produce a slightly different, but nonetheless appropriate, answer.
