Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and Inscribed by the author on the title page ('For ______, that rare reviewer, who actually read(s) the book. Be kind, enjoy, Hugh A. Mulligan'). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. In fact, I saw only one other signed book of his (of a different title) for sale on the Internet. And that book was selling for $145.00. Hugh A. Mulligan was a reporter for The Associated Press for one half a century. When he died in 2008 Tom Curley, president of The AP, called Hugh Mulligan "a legendary storyteller whose wit was as penetrating as his humor was revealing, a friend and mentor to many at AP around the world. He will be missed immensely". Insatiably curious and able to find story potential in almost anything, Mulligan roamed the globe, visiting nearly 150 countries from Europe to equatorial Africa to Tibet. He made 28 trips with the pope and covered more than half a dozen wars, including three reporting tours in Vietnam. In 1970 stories about the war's sudden impact on Cambodia, he described a novice army that 'rode to war on Pepsi-Cola trucks' and the naive courage of a young soldier who 'walked down the road carrying the big red and blue flag, and came home in a body bag'. "Hugh's beat was mankind," former AP President Louis D. Boccardi said. "He had a love affair with the world, and we of the AP loved him for it. There won't be, there can't be, another Hugh Mulligan." You can see the covers of the book in the photographs provided. They are clean, the gilt lettering on the spine is bright, and there is very little wear, a tiny bit at a bottom corner and spine end. On the first blank front end paper a narrow address sticker of the previous owner came right off but did leave an impression of itself. There is also a light crease on the page. On the blank verso of this end paper there is a tear off the top edge at the gutter, slightly more than an inch in length. It is visible only from the side. After that, the pages of the book appear close to perfect, no tears, no creases. And the pages are very tight, just as you would want them, the book being solidly bound. The pages are also very clean. There's the tiniest stain on the Acknowledgments page. I didn't see any other soiling on any of the other pages. And there aren't any markings or attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The last 10 pages are photographs of the author from all over the world. The dust jacket is also in very good condition. I don't see any tears. There isn't any soiling. It is NOT price-clipped and the flaps are in very good condition. The only imperfection is at the very bottom edge of the rear of the jacket where the cellophane that we often don't see on jackets has become visible. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001465
