Joann Hakala is a graduate of Northern Michigan University with a Master of Arts and an Education Specialist degree in Elementary Education. She worked as an elementary school librarian and teacher in the Marquette Area Public Schools for twenty-two years and taught children's literature for one year at NMU. She received the 2004 Upper Peninsula Writer's Association Writer of the Year award for her first book, A Matter of Courage.
