While Dark Horse's chronological series presents it in black and white, Little Lulu was, like every other mainstream American comic book, a color production. Reproducing selected stories from issues 4 through 86 on standard comic-book-size pages, Color Special shows how jolly Little Lulu appeared to its first readers. There is nothing artful, painterly, or emotive about Lulu's coloring. Essentially, it's a matter of filling the spaces bounded by the lines with pure, even hues, and generally, the brighter the better. For ardent followers of the black-and-white series, perhaps the color's not the best thing about the book, however. Rather, the fact that the later the story, the funnier it is, which implies that future series installments will show no slackening in Stanley and Tripp's invention, is the best thing about it.
