This is an American Civil War novel about Miss Veronica Vernon, a southern belle who departs for a visiting spree once her family decrees she must marry. The man her uncle has chosen is Bentley Stratford, the last man she could ever want. Before she knows it, Veronica has been gone for two years, and with the help of her new friend, Amy Williams, lands in a Yankee household.
Brad Williams, a man born in the south and raised in the north, felt fairly ambivalent to the war until Miss Vernon stepped into his life, the epitome of everything he suddenly realized he disliked. Determined to enlighten Veronica, sparks -- both flirtatious and contentious -- fly. For she is determined to find a man who will pretend to be her fiancé and get Bentley off her back, and he is determined to be as uncooperative as possible!
Will Veronica get her wish and evade marriage to Bentley? Will Brad come to understand Veronica's plight as something more than her southern dramatics at work? Read to find out!

I began this novel in sixth grade, as an exercise to begin writing after the summer vacation. I had no idea it would become my thesis six years later, but I knew my dedication would make it one of my best works. My love of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, An Old-Fashioned Girl and the Anne of Green Gables series inspired me to better my writing, and subsequently my novel has been influenced.
Though my novel is Civil War based, my goal was not to write about slavery, or stress the coincidental love story. I wanted to write a story about a girl who grew up when everything from fashion to politics changed. Because this is my senior thesis, I have citations throughout, which hopefully will not impose on your reading pleasure. A lot of time, love, tears and frustration have gone into this story. I am glad to put my name as Catching the Rose’s author, and I hope you enjoy.About the Author:
Binaebi Akah is currently pursuing a Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate degree. She published Catching the Rose during her senior year in high school, and subsequently got into the top five for the Upper Arlington High School Senior Thesis Contest with her novel.
