Review:

I just finished my review copy of Tommy Kovac's collection of his Skelebunnies toon, just out from Slave Labor Graphics, and I'm here to tell you that it is juvenile, scatological, offensive, and very, very funny. Here's the basic premise: one day, two cute bunnies are frolicking in a picturesque wood, when a demon appears. He is so sickened by their saccharine romping that he vomits extremely bilious bile over them, skeletonizing them in seconds. To the demon's dismay, the bunnies continue to romp, though they are now the living dead, walking skeletons with Care Bear sensibilities (they are wont to ride a horribly burned My Little Pony as they go about their duties). Satan appears, is likewise appalled, but realizes that the bunnies' vile sweetness has its uses when it comes to sowing evil. For the rest of the strips, that's just what they do: romp, frolic, and commit disgusting acts of pure, unadulterated evil. Skelebunnies is totally unredeeming, it's pure filth, and I reveled in it. Perhaps you will, too! --Cory Doctorow - Boingboing

Okay: This won't take long. Because the comic up for discussion today lives or dies by its premise. You dig the premise, or you resolutely do not, and I'm not likely to sway anyone from either position. Don't believe me? The Premise: Undead bunnies do beastly, unspeakable things for fun and profit. (Mostly fun.) Still with me? Huh. Okay, here's The Plot: * Two cute fluffy bunnies get vomited upon by a demon; * Acidic demon vomit, natch, strips their flesh; * Satan recruits them to go and do horrid things to the pure and innocent creatures of the world; * Which they do, until they chafe under his infernal yoke, and then; * They take their doing-horrid-things business freelance. Did I mention they have a flying zombie steed named Pretty Pretty Pony Macabre? Because they have a flying zombie steed named Pretty Pretty Pony Macabre. The final set of facts if you're still undecided, after the jump ... Still on the fence? Here's all you need to know about Tommy Kovac's Skelebunnies. 1. It's funny. 2. It's endlessly quotable: "Elves are allergic to pants!" "Mommy, my teeth feel scummy." "She is like a getaway pony." "Wanna gyre and gimble in my wabe?" (Yes, that's a Jabberwocky joke.) "I cannot hold your baby because it is not polite to play with your food." 3. It's tasteless, puerile, and beneath contempt. Can't really link to a sample page, because just about every page, every panel, is NSFW. N remotely SFW. You know that hackneyed phrase that newspaper feature editors bust out whenever they find themselves faced with an article about funnybooks? "Comics aren't just for kids anymore!" You know that phrase? Damn skippy. --Glen Weldon - Monkeysee at NPR.ORG

From Booklist:

One pretty day, two sassy li’l bunnies scamper out to play. Just too cute! So a demon sent by Satan barfs acid on them, dissolving their flesh. Presto, they’re skelebunnies! Soon, they’ve agreed to work for Satan. Their task: “KILL anything cute and furry.” “Like mold?” the boy skelebunny asks, indicating the kind of minions they intend to be: mouthy, annoying, perverse, unreliable. But so what? Waited on by the Woobies (teeny doughboy-like critters that come in three varieties: mushroom, bat, and devil) and Pretty-Pretty Pony Macabre, the marvelous flying unicorn zombie, they don’t need Satan. And, besides, Satan’s gay. But boy skelebunny’s gay, too. And Kovac makes three. While it helps to know and appreciate bitchy gay humor, all you really need to fall for the skelebunnies is the same wry tolerance for perverse silliness that other bad-boy comics require. Meanwhile, Kovac’s graphic style, detailed and busy but completely legible, is as masterly as Satan tries to be with all the Super-Handsome Fantasy Lads he conjures up to really serve him. --Ray Olson
