Most of us have been inspired by the famous—and not-so-famous—words of figures from history, but what if there were a way to gain a deeper understanding of what's been said and who said it? The thoughts of Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Gandhi, and Maya Angelou touch everyone. Quotation Quizzlers takes 50 inspiring quotations and turns them into critical thinking puzzles. The result? A little leisure time that not only challenges the intellect, but touches the heart, as well.

Each Quotation Quizzler consists of a blank grid with scrambled letters placed in vertical columns beneath the squares of the grid. Unscrambled, the letters fill in the spaces on the grid and spell out a quotation. The unscrambling, however, requires exercising a few of students' toughest mental muscles—critical thinking, deductive reasoning, logic, and word analysis, among others. Once they're completed and the sweaty brow is wiped, what's left is a whole lot of relief and a decent helping of inspiration!

The quotations used in Quotation Quizzlers span a variety of topics from art, to sports, to history, and cover a range of themes from friendship, to integrity. Each Quotation Quizzler has an accompanying short biography, which provides concise, factual information about the figure quoted.

About the Author:

Philip Steinbacher has a range of professional experiences combining components of teaching, writing, and entertainment. Before becoming a teacher, he spent 14 years working for the entertainment division of Walt Disney World in Orlando. Since receiving his master's degree in education he has taught students from grades K–12 in public and private schools in Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, and Hawaii. From 1998–2003 he served as program coordinator for a small public school district in the Chicago suburbs, teaching and designing organizational and programmatic systems for administering the district's K–8 gifted program. Steinbacher has led various teacher workshops on differentiation strategies, gifted identification, and other areas of professional development, has worked closely with school boards and administrators reviewing and redesigning gifted programs, and served as his school's curriculum coordinator.

Steinbacher has a bachelor's degree in Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Central Florida, and is a member of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Quotation Quizzlers, a collection of critical thinking puzzles based on inspirational quotations, is his first book. His second title, Vocabulary Ladders, was published by Prufrock Press in 2006. In addition to teaching and writing, Steinbacher is licensed to deliver Avatar, a self-development course taught worldwide that emphasizes personal responsibility, creative thinking, and service to others. Steinbacher lives in Hawaii, where he teaches and writes.

Review:

I envision these Quizzlers forming the basis of team building and class unity discussions, incorporating logical thinking into language arts. -- Tempo Magazine, Spring 2004
