Spring 1944: Emily Bennett, a young English girl, has come to stay with Molly McIntire's family to escape the bombing of London. Emily's parents sent her off with the reminder to be "a brave soldier for England," but Emily doesn't see how she can do that. Molly tries hard to make sweet, shy Emily feel at home, and Emily is grateful for Molly's friendship. Emily is delighted that she can help Molly with math and is pleased and proud when she impresses Molly. But it is not until Emily makes a big mistake and has to ask Molly for help that Emily shows how truly brave she is--and both girls learn what friendship really means.

Grade 2–4—Emily is a third grader from London who has been sent to stay with her American friend, Molly, during World War II. Molly helps Emily overcome her shyness and find a way to aid people back home. This is a companion to the "Molly" books (American Girl), and, with its well-paced plot and likable characters, it's an interesting addition to that series. A concluding chapter includes photographs and anecdotes about English children during the period and expands on Emily's story. Lovers of the "American Girl" series can add an English lass to their list.—Krista Tokarz, Cuyahoga County Public Library, OH

Emily, a new character spotlighted in the American Girls Molly (1944) series, is an English girl sent to the U.S. for her safety during World War II. Though sometimes puzzled by her new American friends' sense of humor, Emily gamely tries to make the best of her situation. Emily's homesickness and difficulties at school make her a much more sympathetic character than Molly, who seems too perfect here to be quite believable. With a photo-illustrated section on children sent away from London during the Blitz, this will inform and entertain readers of the American Girls series. Carolyn Phelan
