A widow is torn between loyalty to her dead husband and the passion for his hated rival.
After a fairy-tale marriage, Paula Wincott has lost her husband, Sam, noted researcher and chemistry professor at the University of Colorado to a sudden heart attack. She attributes his death to his bitterness and despair after being displaced in the department by a younger rival, Boyd Mackenzie. Although they have never met, Paula holds Boyd in contempt, blaming him for her widowhood.
Lonely and rudderless, she signs up for a chemistry class, but when she finds herself in Boyd's class, her well-ordered world shatters as passion flares between them, overwhelming her senses and threatening her loyalty to a dead man.

The seed for this story began to grow in my mind when my mother returned to school after I had completed my Master's Degree at the University of Colorado. She enrolled at the university and with her adventures she provided food for thought so that one day the story of Paula Wincott arrived fully developed in my mind -- lush and colorful with all the nuances of emotional volatility and memorable characters. Paula has some issues that must be resolved before she can move on with her life, but she's stubbornly stuck in limbo.
I closed myself in my office and allowed the story to unfold as Paula's roller coaster ride took her to places I hadn't considered. Boyd appeared as a complete package, so complete that I made no changes; I just wrote what I saw and heard, and he became the representation of the ideal male. Lottie called to me from the tea room, and when I peeked in, she was there, again fully formed, and she became my favorite character. I love to go back to this book and re-read the introductions of various characters as they reveal themselves so completely. They're always fresh and interesting -- even to the author. This novel was a joy for me from start to finish. A product of my heart.
"You've accused me of some responsibility in your husband's death. That's inaccurate and unfair, and I don't accept it. You owe me an explanation for blowing up at me in my classroom. Please, let's just sit down together and talk. I'm sure we can clear this up."
He was being completely reasonable, and his argument made sense, even to Paula. But golden specks danced in the blue depths of his eyes, and Paula didn't want to sit across a table and look into his clean-cut good looks. Her loyalty to Sam wouldn't permit it. She had to hate him as her husband had.
She jerked free of his hand and backed away, her stomach churning. "I said no! You must know my husband despised you. How can you think I'd want to spent a single minute with you if I don't have to? Now please -- just leave me alone."
Boyd stood back, leaning against the car beside her as she started the ignition and put her car into gear. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me."
