Book by Paine, Lauran

Two novella-length pieces by the incredibly prolific Paine are reprinted here. The first, “Phantom Trail,” tells the story of a young woman, Marie, who arrives in the mission town of Fort Triumph, where her father is the mission’s priest. (He became a priest after his wife’s death.) Accompanying a posse to capture some bandits, Father Halorhan is badly wounded; the bandit who shot him is captured and then dies. Was he poisoned? If so, by whom? Paine skillfully examines the thin line between justice and murder. In “Guns of Thunder,” two troopers are murdered, apparently by someone eager to see their sealed orders regarding a shipment of rifles bound for Camp Scott. Captain Ben Southern and two of his men are sent, incognito, into the nearby town to find out who’s responsible. But can three men defend themselves against a large and well-armed opponent? This one’s more of a western spy story, and it’s quite good. For someone who wrote more than 1,000 novels and shorter works, Paine seems to have maintained a remarkably consistent level of quality. --David Pitt
