I love how the spread of issues/story arcs fell when compiled for this volume of Bundles of Trouble. The action starts with the characters excitedly arriving at GaryCon and standing in line and ends (four issue later) with them back home and dealing with the aftermath. The entire Gary Con pilgrimage between two covers. Well, almost in the last volume of this BOT, Bob, Dave and Brian got themselves locked in the Big Guy s basement and were detained.
Though we see a continuation of Nitro s home-table, CattlePunk campaign, almost the entirety of the four issues in this volume deal with events at the mother of all gaming conventions, humbly named after Gary Jackson.
Gary s being back from the dead is still something of a secret at Hard Eight, but that doesn t stop the gawdfather of hack from donning a disguise and attending the show. This makes for some interesting encounters (including a rattled Sara).
The main focus of the Gary Con arc is Nitro s much hyped Hack Factory event that (and spoiler alert) turns out to be an excuse for him to run a WWII D-Day Larp, complete with landing craft, vintage WWII gear, fog machines and fireworks.
Like so many KODT strips over the years, Nitro s D-Day event was originally meant to be a short one-off strip of perhaps three to four pages. It s an idea that started with a doodle on a Jimmy John s napkin in Memphis while waiting for a plane with my good friend Craig Zipse.
It was a simple doodle of Dave in combat gear standing on Omaha beach shouting, I made it! I made it! I won! (behind Dave was a hop scotch board he had apparently just skipped across).
That sparked a conversation about a ludicrous WWII event at a con attempting to simulate the Normandy invasion and the two of us laughing like idiots at the thought of cardboard landing craft loaded with gamers being pushed to shore. Did I say, ludicrous ...? Perfect fodder for a KODT strip of course.
Throughout the entire writing process as the story ballooned from a planned one-off to span four issues, I kept that little doodle pinned near my monitor as I worked toward capturing THAT moment in the comic.
And as it turned out, Dave wasn t even the one who ultimately delivered the line. :)
