Grade 9 Up Over the course of five intense nights, a teen's life is turned upside down in this acutely agile tale that explores modern and older traditions in Asian gender roles. Teenage Masayoshi learns that he is the reincarnation of the legendary female witch Oni-hime. The idea is pretty tough for him to grasp, but it is even harder for him to grapple with the evil curse that is connected to his family and the witch's mysterious past. After he links forces with an occult-obsessed sidekick, a demon protector, and a shaman, Masayoshi's life becomes quite interesting. With chilling ghosts, demon bees, and evil peasant girls who look like something out of the horror movie The Ring, Nights provides a fabulously spooky and smart adventure. The writing explores many facets of gender roles, specifically which traits and behaviors are typically female and which are male. With the blending of contemporary and ancient ideals and legends with a dash of action and horror, this book would appeal to fans of Rumiko Takahashi's Inuyasha series (Viz Media), and will probably be hard to keep on the shelves.
