About the Author:
Margaret Hillert wrote her first poem when she was eight years old and has continued writing for children and adults ever since. She has written and published over eighty books for children who are learning to read. Some of her books have been translated into German, Danish, Portuguese and Swedish. Over a million children worldwide have learned to read and to love reading thanks to Margaret Hillert. Margaret developed her knack for writing exciting books for beginning readers during her 34 years as a first-grade teacher Her use of a familiar vocabulary of high-frequency words helps children gain confidence and fluency as they read. Her wonderful stories spark their interest. Margaret earned a teaching degree from Wayne State University in 1948, after completing a nursing degree in 1944 from the University of Michigan. Teaching children to read has always been her first love. She actively started writing children's books in 1961 when she realized that it was hard to find good children's books for beginning readers. At eighty-five years of age, Margaret continues to write books for children. She lives with her three cats, Sam, Peanut and Tommy Tiger. She wakes up early every morning and goes for long walks, feeding any stray cats she encounters. In addition to writing children's books, Margaret has authored a book of a poetry for adults, writes magazine articles, gives lectures, and always finds time to read to children at her local library. Margaret Hillert, who won a prestigious award from the Woman's National book Association in 1993, finds her biggest reward to be the three generations of students whom she has taught to read.
