Rebecca is a six and a half year-old girl who is out of luck ― her parents are on the verge of divorce and she is always getting sick due to a weak immune system. One rainy day Rebecca's luck changes when she meets a magical microbe named Ernest, who becomes her best friend! Ernest is no regular germ; he's about the same height as Rebecca and he can talk. Can Rebecca keep her parents together with the help of her new friend? And can anyone really have a friend who belongs in a Petri dish?

About the Author:

GUILLAUME BIANCO wishes to tell stories for adults and children and raise big questions while entertaining. With Billy Fog, Eco, and Epictetus published in his native France and soon in America, his wish seems to be coming true! His work has been featured in the DISNEY FAIRIES series from Papercutz.

ANTONELLO DALENA has drawn Donald Duck comics for Topolino and PK3 and drawn many of Disney's feature animation graphic novels and comics, including Atlantis, Cars, Toy Story, Bolt, Wall-E, Ratatouille, and Brave. His work has appeared in the DISNEY FAIRIES graphic novel series as well as SYBIL THE BACKPACK FAIRY, both from Papercutz.

From Booklist:

Six-year-old Rebecca gets sick a lot. That’s hard enough, but her parents have been arguing more lately, and she’s afraid they’ll separate. Her older sister, Coralie, copes by locking herself in her bedroom. One day Rebecca plays outside in the rain and catches Ernest, a “super microbe,” who becomes her best friend despite the efforts of her parents and her physician, Dr. Fakbert, to get rid of him. With the aid of Ernest, the frogs she likes to catch, and even Coralie, Rebecca copes with the fevers and medical scares in her life while also trying to keep her parents together even after Daddy moves out. Rebecca’s rich imagination and her family situation make this book more suitable for readers that can separate fantasy from reality and understand that sometimes life isn’t happy. The text, translated from the original French, is lively, and the art is very cute and cartoony, softening the sometimes serious story. Grades 2-4. --Kat Kan
