The surname MacRae has one spelling in Gaelic and 68 spelling variants in English. The Clan MacRae has no septs. The author identified these spelling variants and compiled a database of all persons of this Clan in the American census records from 1790-1920. This is volume 1. The Author served as the first Historian of Clan MacRae, and conceived of the project after helping clan members at Scottish Games. "I have organized listings by states, then alphabetically by first name and then chronologically. So, instead of not being able to find Farquhar MacRae because he was transcribed as F Mckree in one year and Frcr Mcrath in another, you search by the first letter or first name in the state they were known to have lived in. When a person is found in the census record, you now know the geographical locale and the time period, and you can then expand your knowledge of that person and his family by looking for deeds and wills, military records and other records. Without the key geographical location, we have no starting point, and without that, we cannot trace back to Scotland, something I regularly do for Clients." Please note: This book is intended as a finding aid. It is not a listing of the biographies of all persons of our clan, nor was it intended to be.
