Crewe was more than just a small southern town. It was a community of families, one big neighborhood, a microcosm of a patriotic American culture driven by family values. In this simple nutshell, Sherwood Robertson, a natural-born stroyteller and native son of the Norman Rockwell-esque Crewe, Virginia, spins a nostalgic look back at growing up in small-town America in the post-World War II years. With his dry humor and affection, keen insight and respect, robertson shares some seventy-plus years worth of memories of coming of age in a time when friendships were forged to last forever, when family trumped all else, when schoolteachers left their indelible influences on growing young minds, and when the American work ethic was the expected way of life. Kick back, relax, and enjoy Robertson's entertaining and informative recollection of faces, places, and events. Smell the bounty of Auntee's kitchen. Hear the slam of the porch screen door. Traipse through the woods with his band of bunnies. Learn the remarkable history and the fate of the great American railroad industry. And, abover all else, laugh yourself silly at the exploits of an honest-to-God, all-American kid and his cadre of cohorts. You'll be glad you did. And who knows? You just might see yourself in these pages Mary Novitsky, editor
