Cigar-smoking, beer-guzzling, cell-toting, human watering hoses overpowered me. As a female ranger, Liz Ebert often tells sluggish golfers to close-the-gap and keep pace with other foursomes to prevent golf-course gridlock. But all the while, she's been attempting to close a much greater golf gap: a gender gap. In "Closing The Gap: Tales of a Woman Ranger," Ebert takes the reader inside the mind of a female ranger as she tackles the male-dominated job of course ranger. Starting with her terror-filled first day, Ebert shares a collection of short stories chronicling her many trials and tribulations-some awkward, some explosive-as well as her goal of being accepted in her job. With each chapter, it's possible you might see yourself in certain characters. Maybe you'll smile, maybe you'll cringe. But if you meet Ebert during one of her shifts, stop and say hello. And don't be alarmed if she asks you to "close the gap."

About the Author:

Born in Astoria, NY, Liz Ebert has become an avid golf enthusiast since her 30-year stretch as head cook for Ebert’s Deli, a family-run eatery in Bohemia, Long Island.

After picking up the game in 1997, Ebert organized three golf fundraisers, collecting over $30,000 for AIDS education and prevention. In 2002, she was hired to her current position of ranger at a semi-private golf club in Suffolk County, NY, making her the sole female ranger on Long Island. Today, the 54-year-old Ebert remains an active member of a woman's golf league on the South Shore of Long Island.

She currently resides in a private golf community located in Mount Sinai, NY. She’s been married to her husband, Phil, for 29 years, and they have a son named Michael.

I quickly realize my orientation did not properly train me to handle the position. Proper training would have required that I be licensed to carry a gun. Not a big gun. I’d be happy with a small gun. A pistol. I need to protect myself. The pro-shop sent me into combat without a weapon. I’m ill-equipped for the job.
