Travis Craven had fond memories of his youth, days spent playing the courses around the Monterey-Carmel area. His first kill occurred after a confrontation with a member at Cypress Point. It was a foggy morning. Travis had just celebrated his sixteenth birthday and had a brand spanking new set of clubs. This particular morning, he decided to sneak onto the fifteenth hole at Cypress, a secluded par three with easy access from the road. Neglecting the "Private Property" signs as he always had in the past, young Travis hit a few balls across the small water inlet, over the heads of the barking seals.
On the final ball, a perfectly struck eight iron, Craven posed in a perfect finish and watched as the ball found the bottom of the cup. He looked around, wanting someone to have seen it, anyone. Please, God, he thought. Then a voice called from behind.
"Hey kid!"
Travis turned and smiled.
"Did you see that?" he shouted in absolute joy.
The stranger quickly pounced on the boy and began dragging him toward the boundary fence.
"Seen you here before, you smart young fuck. Get the hell off the course! This is a private club! Now get off and stay off!"
In the excitement, Travis had left his bag on the ground where he had teed the shot.
"Hey mister, my clubs! Can I get my clubs?"
The member walked to the bag, picked it up, and in one fast motion flung the new set of clubs into the Pacific.
Three weeks later the man was found floating in the same inlet. Word on the street was that he'd slipped in while trying to retrieve a ball, and that was how it stayed. The bruise on his head no doubt caused by his landing on the rocks below. Only the seals would know the truth. The seals and young Travis Craven, who always did swing a good club.
Playing at Cypress Point years later bore great irony. Craven wasn't sure if his favor was on account of his somewhat fearful reputation or his outstanding playing ability. On the one hand, who would dare tell Travis Craven he couldn't have a tee time? But then, on the other hand, maybe they enjoyed playing with a scratch golfer.
The Dolphine sat pondering the sunset and listening as the piper played Amazing Grace, a tradition at the course this time of day. As the final notes dwindled from the bagpipes, the cell phone came to life.
"Ah shit, spoiled a perfect moment," he mumbled softly.
