Ellie Wold can't wait to graduate from high school. She and Andrew Bjorklund have been waiting to get married since...well, since forever, and in June they will finally wed. When Andrew announces they have to postpone the wedding, she's disappointed but takes it in stride--there must be a good reason, or Andrew's pa wouldn't ask it of them. But Andrew is angry and can't understand why Ellie isn't upset too, especially when they'd been planning to "marry up" ever since they were in grade school. Disgruntled, he works out his frustration in stubborn determination to finish building their barn and mail-order house, working himself to exhaustion. But just when the new house is nearly finished, an unthinkable tragedy occurs. Throwing aside the vow he made to Ellie, Andrew seeks revenge. As their plans unravel, it looks as if their love may not survive.

Today, Lauraine Snelling is a member of the more than Two Million Books In Print club, but when she first began, she was a mother of three teenagers with a simple dream to write “horse books for kids.”
Her dreams manifested into reality in 1982 with Tragedy on the Toutle (now re-issued as What About Cimmaron?), a story about a girl and her horse caught in the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington state. Lauraine continued the dream, publishing two more best-selling series: High Hurdles and The Golden Filly, and expanded into writing inspirational romances for adults.
Her Norwegian heritage spurred her to craft An Untamed Land, volume one of the Red River of the North family saga and a trilogy called Return to Red River, as well as the Daughters of Blessing series, and the Home to Blessing series. Due to reader demand she is currently working on another Blessing series.
Three more historical sets have released in addition, one set during the Civil War which traced the journey of a young woman leading Thoroughbreds across the country to safety, a series called Dakotah Treasures, and the Wild West Wind series.
Writing about real issues within a compelling story is a hallmark of Lauraine’s style, shown in her contemporary romances and women’s fiction which has probed the issues of forgiveness, loss, domestic violence and cancer. In her novel, The Way of Women, three women delve deep into their hearts as they encounter a volcanic eruption and prove that when women strive together they can face even the unthinkable. In The Brushstroke Legacy, three generations of women discover that God’s gifts are powerful enough to speak across centuries.
All told, she has over 80 books published. She thinks. She’s not sure. She’d rather write them than count them. Lauraine’s work has been translated into Norwegian, Danish and German as well as produced as audio books.
Drayton2003Awards have followed her dedication to “telling a good story”: the 2014 Romantic Times Career Achievement award for Inspirational Fiction, the Silver Angel Award for An Untamed Land and a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart for Song of Laughter.
Helping others reach their writing dream is the reason Lauraine teaches at writer’s conferences across the country. She mentors others through book doctoring and also produces material on query letters and other aspects of the writing process.
Her readers clamor for more books more often and Lauraine would like to comply, if only her ever-growing flower gardens didn’t call quite so loudly over the soothing rush of the water fountains in her back yard and if the hummingbirds weren’t quite so entertaining.
Lauraine and husband Wayne have two grown sons and a Basset Hound named Winston.
It's the early 1900s in Blessing, North Dakota. Ellie and Andrew plan their May wedding and are deeply disappointed when they must postpone it. As tragedy and mystery enter their lives, each must learn to trust God with his or her deepest feelings. Renee Ertl narrates with credible skill. She does not, however, match voice with character. Though this might be disconcerting at the beginning, one finds that the story is engaging even without audible characterization. The pacing and intensity come through well. This simple and sweet love story has a predicable ending and exemplifies faith, commitment, and forgiveness. N.L. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
