Sharaledon D. Brave is a native of Georgetown, South Carolina. After living in the metro-Atlanta area for over 15 years, Mr. Brave now resides in Arlington, Virginia.
Sharaledon has been writing poetry and prose for over 25 years. He is a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor s Award for Writing Excellence in S.C. In many of his pieces, he evokes the rich low-country dialect from coastal Carolina. He is most proud of the necessity for every piece to show a spiritual connection, be it to our God Almighty or to a deeper level of love and understanding of oneself and surrounding.
While working as a long-term substitute teacher in Columbia, Mr. Brave s long awaited freshman project, What Will I Tell My Children was published and made available to the public in December 2006. He refers to it as his labor of love. What Will I Tell My Children is a collection of poetry embracing many aspect of our community. During this time, Mr. Brave was asked and volunteered his time instructing at-risk students at the Center for Accelerated Preparation in creating their own greeting cards using Microsoft programs and conducted workshops with inmates in the compiling and publishing of poetry through the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
In September 2001, he was featured in Atlanta Goodlife Magazine. A poet with a love for photography, Sharaledon s work was displayed at the Ponce de Leon branch of Atlanta-Fulton County Library in February 2002 during Black History Month and in November 2003 at the Peachtree Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library sponsored by Artlanta, Local Artist Showcase. In addition to the Artlanta display, his work was displayed at the Apex Museum on Historic Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia during October 2003. January 2007, works of Sharaledon D. Brave became available online.
More recently, he has been featured on the Urban Scene with Don Frierson of WGCV 620AM. Sharaledon has delivered his life-changing poetry at Voorhees College; Denmark, SC, South Carolina State University (his alma mater); Orangeburg, SC, Ebenezer Baptist Church; Atlanta, GA, Brookland Baptist Church; Columbia, SC and a host of other organizations and institutions.
His ability to write poetically, as well as technically on a wide range of subjects coupled with his talent for visual design, black & white photography and framing is allowing his work to quietly come onto the scene in many private collections.
What is not so quietly coming onto the scene is a remarkable line of greeting cards which bears the slogan Say It With Love. The essence of the greeting card line is both depth and simplicity simultaneously. The cards feature many of the prose from his books along with incredible pictures and graphics.
I now understand that God has blessed me with all sorts of artistic abilities, and not just one genre. Often time, I am amazed at what I am able to produce, keeping in mind that it is produced to be shared. It is my strongest belief that art, like all other vehicles of communication, must be done with integrity, dignity, and a valued sense of responsibility. I also believe that God has the greatest sense of humor. Therefore, I try to invoke humor when it is appropriate. I know that it is my gift to uplift, my desire to inspire, my duty to pass the cup, and my goal to never give up - Sharaledon D. Brave
