The Political Profiles series does a good job of giving readers well-rounded views of the candidates. This title shows what makes Giuliani, New York’s former mayor, such an attractive presidential candidate while not shying away from the personal and political foibles that continually dog him. The book begins with a few pages about September 11, 2001, and then moves back to the politician’s early years as a young Yankee fan growing up in the shadow of Dodger stadium. Attention is paid to his father’s unsavory background, including a stint in jail, although this was apparently kept from Giuliani. The book then goes on to discuss his schooling, legal career, and political climb. Sharp crisply explains Giuliani’s marital problems and acknowledges several affairs, including one with the woman who would become his third (and current) wife. A longer section on September 11 describes how Giuliani’s take-charge attitude comforted a nation, while also explaining some of the criticism he has gotten since. Photos are sometimes stock, though always well reproduced. A time line is appended and, happily, quotes are sourced. Grades 6-9. --Ilene Cooper
