She'd wanted her father to pay more attention to her, and she'd wanted her family to be like it used to be. She hadn't wanted everything to change so drastically that she may not even survive it. As Liza proves herself a basketball star, everyone - from college basketball recruiters to the gorgeous Kyle Reynolds - seems to take note of her. Everyone, that is, except her own father. While her father is busy at his law practice, Liza learns about a strange new religion from Kyle. Could Kyle's religion help her family? Or is it already too late for her father to make amends? When yet another broken promise finally leads to tragedy, Liza doesn't know if she will ever be able to forgive her father. It will take a good friend, a new belief, and a miracle straight from heaven to help Liza see that she still has a choice. The compelling story of a high school basketball star, this is a novel every girl will want, and none will be able to put down!

About the Author:

Rebecca was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. She spent countless hours swimming in the ocean, collecting shells, and building sand castles. She graduated from BYU with a bachelor of arts degree in communications. While attending BYU, she met and married her sweetheart, Del. Rebecca now lives in Colorado on a small ranch with horses, goats, a dog, a cat, and a llama named Tina. She and Del have been blessed with ten creative and multi-talented children. She has had children's stories published in online and print magazines, including the Friend, and is the author of the children's picture book Grasshopper Pie. Besides writing, Rebecca also enjoys knitting, home redecorating, and dancing to disco music while she cleans the house. And she's consumed at least 3,541 pounds of chocolate and even more ice cream.

Review:

Most people are busy. Sometimes it is difficult to find time to read. At other times, it is hard to find something to read in the short moments of spare time that do come up. Those small snatches of time often will not allow for heavy reading or intense concentration. "Heaven Scent," by Rebecca Cornish Talley, is a good choice for these times. This book flows well and is light reading. It has a nice balance of the believable and the slightly unlikely. "Heaven Scent" has a strong story line that is easy to follow. Liza, the main character, is one who invites you to empathize with her. This book has many things going for it. The storyline is straight-forward. Nearly every female, age ten and up, will be able to relate to Liza. Who can't remember those horrible growing pains of trying to redefine their relationship with one parent or another? Young girls will be able to see themselves in Liza. I enjoyed watching Liza's progression in finding hope, faith, and healing. Rebecca Cornish Talley does a terrific job of making this a believable part of her book. There are no quick fixes or miracle cures, just a gradual growth in maturity. As Liza matures and heals, so do her relationships with those around her. This book does not grab you and pull you in from page one. Instead, as you read, it slowly wraps you in the story. While I didn't find the storyline particularly compelling, it is still enjoyable. "Heaven Scent" is not the favorite blanket that a person reaches for when in need of extra comfort. However, it is like any blanket on a cool day, something comfortable that you won't cast off. --Jaymie Reynolds

"Heaven Scent" is the first novel by LDS author Rebecca Cornish Talley. We meet Liza Compton, a girl in her senior year of high school at a new school. Her father recently landed a job in a prestigious law firm and uprooted the family to a new area, believing that a big house and great cars would be the answer to their dreams. Instead, he spends more and more time at work and away from his family, and Liza wishes things could go back to the way they were before. Sure, they didn't have much money, but they had their father, and he spent time with them. It's the night of the championship game, and Liza's father isn't there. She was hoping he'd come, but his absence isn't that big of a surprise. She makes the winning shot and is the hero of her team, and waits up to tell him about it, but he doesn't come home until long after she's given up and gone to bed. This is the pattern in her family - her father gone, her mother making excuses for him. Liza and her brother Jason are getting tired of all the pretense and wish that someone would come forward and plainly tell the truth - and someone does; their mother. Years ago, she was baptized into the LDS church and didn't stay active, but now she wants to start going to church again. Liza's not sure how she feels about that, but it seems to be bringing her mother peace, so she decides not to make an issue out of it. When Liza's mother puts her foot down and asks her father to leave, Liza is stunned, but then her father takes her mother away on a romantic weekend. They come back ready to recommit to the family, and plan a weekend at their cabin, just the four of them, with no work to interfere. But then a tragic accident takes away everything Liza holds dear, and she must work hard to find the forgiveness she needs to move forward with her life. I enjoyed the story. I would have liked to see more flow and I did think some of the conflicts were resolved too quickly, but this book shows a lot of promise for a first time author. --Tristi Pinkston
