Virtually every atlas produced today shows the world using standard geographic boundaries and land areas. In the Information Age, however, physical dimensions matter increasingly less. What is more important are numbers of people, their capabilities, production, and ideas. Human beings are visual creatures. Millions of years before humans could speak, much less write, they could see. The human brain is designed to take in visual data and process it with amazing speed compared to the complex and laborious task of translating text or statistics into useful impressions. Maps have proven to be a uniquely effective medium for humans to easily assimilate large amounts information.
This book attempts, for the first time, to create more than fifty-one unique graphics that show important world statistical information in map format. Using this method, one can rapidly grasp country-specific data and easily discern relative relationships that are often surprising. Mathematical analysis of the underlying data is also provided to highlight key observations that are hidden in the maps, but yield their secrets using basic statistical tools.
The result is a book that uniquely blends cartography and statistics which can impart the reader with novel insights using minimal effort.
