ZEOLA begins with the death of Jessica Jackson in a horrendous car accident. She is rushed to the hospital but subsequently dies. When the doctors realized she was pregnant, they save her baby through surgery. In Jessica's wallet is the name of Zeola Brown. Zeola and her husband, Jacob, go to the hospital, claim the child and eventually adopt her. They name her, Annie Joy Brown. Jessica had been a boarder at the Brown's home before she was killed. Zeola and Jacob prove to be excellent parents, but Annie is constantly plagued by the fact that she doesn't know who her father is, thus beginning her search for the man who fathered her. There are many fascinating characters in ZEOLA. Gilda, a seven-year-old girl whose parents abandoned her, was also being raised in the Brown home, and she adopts Annie as her sister. She is loud, swears a lot and is a funny character. Zeola herself has a great deal of wisdom about life and exhibits real Christianity in her approach to life and people. Jimmy Ray Valentine falls in love with Annie, but the question lingering in Annie's mind is; who is her father? It was a smoothly written book with seriousness as well as humor. It was also very realistic in how the characters were portrayed. It would be an excellent choice for those with similar problems of missing parents and any one else who wants to understand the pain of not knowing your parents.
