A National Guard corporal recently returned from deployment in the Middle East, and suffering from undiagnosed PTSD, has decided to murder the used car dealer, and former college football player, who he suspects raped his wife thirteen years ago, and who may be the father of his daughter. A homeless man was arrested for the rape back then, but was strangled in jail before his trial could be completed. The key evidence was a pair of red, white, and blue sneakers the man was found wearing-the same type of shoes worn that night by the football hero and the wife's boyfriend at the time, who had run away, but now has returned as a Catholic priest. At the same time a Hollywood film company is in town making an action movie called, "Battle of the Bridge." They plan to blow up the abandoned Wilbender Bridge, an old iron girder bridge that looks very much like a WW II span in Germany. The local National Guard unit is standing in for both the U. S. Army and the German Army in the movie.
