In a series that explores the logic-defying comebacks and tough losses, the dramatic interceptions, fumbles, game-winning field goals, and touchdowns that shape a fan’s greatest memories of their beloved team, this book does not disappoint as the ultimate collector’s item for Hawkeyes fans. It chronicles the most famous moments in the University of Iowa’s football history, including Warren Holloway's miraculous game-ending catch in the Capital One Bowl; "The Kick," Rob Houghtlin's game-winning 29-yard field goal against Michigan in 1985; Gordon Locke's one-yard touchdown plunge to hand Notre Dame their first loss in three years; and Chuck Long's touchdown run in the closing minute to clinch a comeback win over Michigan State. The descriptions of each play are accompanied with game information and quotes from participants, players, and observers with firsthand accounts.

The University of Iowa has fielded a football team since 1889, and during that time Iowa has participated in more than 1,100 games featuring roughly 150,000 different plays. Most of these plays have passed into history with little fanfare, but a select few are destined to be remembered for the ages: these are plays that won games, turned around a season, or put the exclamation point on a career. The 50 Greatest Plays in Iowa Hawkeyes Football History digs deep into the annals of Hawks football lore and extracts these very best moments, bringing them back to life with a rich clarity that will delight every fan who thinks of Kinnick Stadium as his or her home away from home.
Iowa alum and author Michael Maxwell has painstakingly researched the school's football history and assembled 50 fascinating chapters that describe each play and explain its importance--plus reveal "the rest of the story." Readers will relish player and coach profiles, quotes from participants, and comprehensive game statistics, as well as a generous selection of memorable photographs from the University of Iowa archives. Xs and Os diagrams highlight the keys to successful execution for selected plays and practically invite readers into the Hawks' locker room. Forewords from Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and longtime Hawkeyes broadcaster Gary Dolphin provide exclusive insight into how various plays unfolded and why they have earned their place in Iowa lore.
Guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment--and to spawn endless debate among fans--The 50 Greatest Plays in Iowa Hawkeyes Football History brings the school's greatest stars to life.
