Love was the one thing Lily always thought she did better than her mother. She believed that she knew exactly what love took, what it cost and what it meant -- and she thought of her long marriage to Tom as proof of it. But in the short period between Christmas 2007 and the start of fire season, everything she understood about love unraveled. That's when Lily realized how very little she knew about the way love worked. "Would you do it all again, knowing what you know now;" her mother asked. Eleanor was 75 years old, about to be married again herself, and hoping that this time she might get it right. "In a heartbeat," Lily said -- not only because she believed it, but because she knew it was what her mother needed to hear.

The Threadbare Heart was inspired by something that happened at Wellesley College in 1956. That was the year my mother arrived as a freshman from South Orange, New Jersey. She was just 16 years old. On the first weekend at school, her friend from home knew some Harvard boys and a blind date was arranged. The boys arrived in a Studebaker. The girls were dressed in sweater sets and pearls. And couples were determined by height. My mother was the shortest of the girls. The man who would become her husband and my father, was the shortest of the boys. My parents were married in June immediately after their graduation. One of the other boys from the Great Date, the one who was my father's roommate and swimming teammate, was their best man. Recently, after long and rich and complicated lives, my mother married that boy - 4 months and 45 years after they had first met. Something about the story captured my imagination in the mysterious ways that stories do, and I began to play around with it. I changed the year, I added drama that never happened, I added jealousies that never existed, and I began to craft a narrative that, I hope, says something about the nature of life and love.About the Author:
