The Path into Healing is a model for healing through the feminine side of the soul. The purpose of this book is to outline a process whereby a person can understand and acquaint him or herself with an aspect of our awareness often neglected in our world today. Much of the emphasis in our world is on what a person can achieve without regard to how these achievements affect the world and the people living in these achievements. The Path into Healing is an attempt to give acknowledgment to the inner qualities of living that our outer world thrusts upon us. Just think for a moment what a child does and says when he/she gets hurt. They want their mommy. Why is it that when we are hurt, we look to the feminine soul to give us strength and direction. On September 11, 2001, the first thing we did when New York City was bombed was to turn inside ourselves in prayer, for direction, and for hope beyond our external world being destroyed around us. This inward look into a world that is with us throughout our life is a womb like state of being. Inside us is an incredible source of strength and energy capable of nurturing a dying person through death, helping us rebuild what is destroyed in our external world, and transforming the most drastic event into a presence of peace. Thus is the world of the feminine spirit.

Sam Oliver’s timely focus on the feminine is well suited for today’s world. Individuals seeking hope, healing, peace and compassion, qualities often associated with the feminine, will find this book useful and rewarding. While the title may appear most attractive to women readers, it is equally valuable for men who seek a better understanding of the feminine side of nature and the way these qualities are present in all of us, male or female. The author asks the reader to draw within to a “womb-like” state, reflective of contemplation. It is here that his writing helps us to understand the heart and reveals the soul which is unconditional love. The challenge in this progression is to better understand and appreciate the self through an awakening to the feminine spirit that leads to contentment and centeredness.Integration is one of the book’s themes. Throughout the book Oliver talks of the importance of integrating the feminine and masculine, heart and soul, human and divine, fullness and emptiness, and birth and death. He asks readers to answer for themselves the question, “Do you struggle or dance with these challenges?” Incorporating his own poetry to summarize the chapter’s content, Oliver invites readers to use their own creativity to reflect and pose questions about the true meaning of “integrating the feminine spirit” in the personal notes page provided at the end of each chapter. Allowing the feminine spirit to be our guide offers us an opportunity to see the world with an inner depth, to see the soul and respond. Sam Oliver provides us a meaningful reflection on how to commence this journey.Roberta Reynolds Spencer, Director of support services (The Center for hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.
