Darra Williamson has been quilting and teaching for almost 30 years. Named Professional Quilter magazine's 1989 Quilt Teacher of the Year, she has taught throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. Darra is a freelance editorial consultant for quilt-book publishers, authors, and websites.
By Christine Porter and Darra Williamson, this title brings a touch of class and modernity to this American icon. At the same time the designers have retained Sue's charm and innocence. In these quilts, she has shed the apron.
These are color-rich, seasonal projects with one for each month of the year. Suitable for beginners, the delightful, quick and easy designs will be ready in no time. They're only 22 inches by 26 inches. These combine applique and easy piecing techniques.
The center panel of each quilt depicts Sue engaged in a seasonal activity. The borders offer seasonal motifs, which are mostly appliqued. January shows a ski trip. In the summer Sue goes on a cruise and visits the beach. September finds her back in the classroom. These are darling quilts you'll proudly display throughout the house.
For each project the authors provide a list of materials, a cutting chart, and step by step, color illustrated instructions from start to finish along with color layouts. There are full-size, ready to use applique templates. Throughout the book there are boxes with quick tips. This title also covers sewing and quilting basics as well as hand and machine applique. --Sewing/Needlework @ Suite 101
Sunbonnet Sue gets a facelift for the 21st century. This classic little girl continues to enchant quilters generation after generation. Quiltmakers Christine Porter and Darra Williamson present 12 small quilts, 22" x26", that feature Sue in seasonal settings based on the theme of the month. January finds Sue hitting the slopes on her skis. Sue dons her yellow rain slicker for those April showers and come September, Sue heads back to school.
The book is broken down into two sections. "Sue Basics" is an area where all the elements common to each quilt are presented. Following that, you have your choice of 12 seasonal quilts you may want to create. Make them all or just choose your favorite.
The patterns are designed for fusible applique. If you would like to hand applique your quilt you will need to reverse the patterns and add 3/16" to 1/4" seam allowance to each template piece. Full-size patterns for Sue and elements for each quilt can be found in the book. As an added bonus you can visit a website listed in the back of the book for instructions for two larger quilts using the same Sue blocks you created in the smaller projects. --The Applique Society
By using today's enticing fabrics, quilting experts Christine Porter and Darra Williamson give Sunbonnet Sue a wonderfully updated face lift and a new lease on life. There is a series of small quilts, one for each month of the year. Featuring seasonal themes, fast and easy fusible applique methods and useful embellishing tips. She has returned with a modern new look. --Fabrications Magazine
