9781604694277: The Timber Press Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Mountain States (Regional Vegetable Gardening Series)

Growing vegetables requires regionally specific information—what to plant, when to plant it, and when to harvest are based on climate, weather, and first frost. The Timber Press Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Mountain States tackles this need head on, with regionally specific growing information written by local gardening expert, Mary Ann Newcomer. This region includes Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, eastern Washington and Oregon, northern Nevada, and the southernmost parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Monthly planting guides show exactly what you can do in the garden from January through December. The skill sets go beyond the basics with tutorials on seed saving, worm bins, and more.

From the Author:

Growing your own food is truly a labor of love. It's a deeply satisfying feeling to be able to stand in the garden eating your fill of golden raspberries or yellow pear tomatoes, both warm from the morning sun. My grandparents started me on this gardening path, and I will always be glad they did. I am lucky most of my family and friends, by nature or design, happen to be fond of gardening and even fonder of a great meal produced from the garden.

Being able to share my love of gardening, via this book, with new and seasoned gardeners is a gift. I hope it brings you a delicious experience and bounty to share.

From the Back Cover:

Walla Walla onions, crisp sweet peas, and juicy Hermiston melons are just a few of the harvest delights awaiting gardeners in the mountain states. The region’s topography of skyscraping peaks and vast sagebrush steppe, while stunning, offers up weather conditions as dramatic as they are variable. So, how do you use that hot, dry summer weather to grow the sweetest bell peppers? Which amendments are best for our lean, mean soil? And during the long winter months, how can you protect overwintering root vegetables from frost?

Mary Ann Newcomer answers these questions and more while covering the many eccentricities of gardening in the arid west. Monthly planning guides show exactly what you can do in the garden from January through December. The skill sets go beyond the basics with tutorials on seed saving, rainwater harvesting, and composting.

Whether you are just starting your season or looking for ways to extend it, this is your guide to producing a bountiful, year-round harvest in the mountain states.
