9781604940206: Speaking Better French: More Faux Amis!

It's easy to assume that French words mean the same as English words, when they look and sound pretty much the same. Most of the time you'd be correct. However, some of these word pairs may have completely different meanings. They are called false friends, or faux amis.

These faux amis can cause misunderstandings, uncomfortable situations, and even embarrassment if you use them in conversation and they mean something entirely different than what you expected. This book is written to help you avoid these awkward misunderstandings.

This book isn't a dry list of faux amis. It's written in conversational language and is easy and fun to read. Each faux ami word pair is explained so that you will understand the differences in how the French word is used compared to the English. You'll also see examples of its usage in sentences and phrases.

When you've finished reading this book, you will have learned most of these faux amis without ever having had to consciously memorize them, simply because they're so interesting.

About the Author:

I'm a native anglophone like you. I grew up in Brooklyn and spent twelve years in Boston going to college and doing post-graduate studies. I started learning French in high school but back then we didn't learn any conversation at all, just vocabulary and grammar and reading. And it wasn't much fun. I'm now retired and live with my wife (and my cat) for a part of each year in France, splitting my time between Provence and Bretagne. Our daughter, who is now completely trilingual in French, English and Chinese, also joins us for part of her summer break from grad school. I spend a good deal of my time hiking, bicycling, and reading as well as writing, and I love a variety of the French card game belote that's called "la coinche". I've written a number of books about learning French. My goal isn't to write textbooks, but rather is to write books which are interesting and even FUN to read. I hope that my books will make learning more about French a real pleasure for you. I also wanted to make sure that I gave you the keys to French CONVERSATION as it, along with fun, was so sadly lacking in my early studies.

Book Description Wheatmark. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 156 pages. Faux amis (false friends) are French words that look and sound like English words but have different meanings than what youd expect. Its easy to assume that French words mean the same as English words when they look and sound pretty much the same. Most of the time you would be correct. However, occasional word pairs look the same, may even be spelled the same, but have different meanings. These false friends can cause misunderstandings, uncomfortable situations, and even embarrassment when you use them in conversation and they mean something entirely different than what you meant to say. This book will help you avoid these embarrassing misunderstandings. Its not a dry list of faux amis. Its written in conversational language and its easy and fun to read. Youll learn how each French word differs from the English one. Almost all of them are also accompanied by examples of the word used in sentences and phrases to illustrate, and to make very clear, exactly how it should be used. When you have finished reading this book, you will hopefully remember most of these faux amis simply because they are really fascinating to learn about, without having had to consciously memorize them. This is the second of three books on faux amis. The first was called Speaking Better French, Faux Amis, and the third is Speaking Better French, Still More Faux Amis. Finally, they were all combined into one book: French Faux Amis, The Combined Book. Here are some comments from others about this and other books on learning French by this author: I think your books are wonderful. You have made a fantastic contribution to the French language profession. --- Professor Judy Baughin, Raymond Walters CollegeI have very much enjoyed Faux Amis and plan to order it for my translation class this coming semester. You have done a real service to learners of French. . . This is important work. --- Professor John Romeiser, University of Tennessee, KnoxvilleAs with your previous book, I am amazed at how fun to read, as well as incredibly informative the book is. Its a wonderful tool --- Professor Brigitte Humbert, Middlebury CollegeI love the Faux Amis, especially the relaxed, conversational presentation. Im going to suggest that we recommend it for students in our intermediate and advanced classes as a supplementary reference book. ---- Professor Norman Shapiro, Wesleyan UniversityYour little books are great! ---- Professor AG Fralin, Washington and Lee UniversityI absolutely love Faux Amis and have recommended it to my third-year students. Its so well done. Faux Amis is a hard act to follow, in part because the expressions themselves capture the imagination and the comparisons are often inherently amusing. It definitely helps students get it. --- Professor Herta Rodina, Ohio UniversityI love your books! They are easy to navigate, and they are extremely useful to non-native French speakers. Maybe Im odd, but I actually enjoy reading them at night in bed before falling to sleep, theyre that entertaining. ---- Professor John Turvaville, University of Tennessee, KnoxvilleThe books are excellent (Faux Amis, Rules for Gender) and Ive recommended them as reference texts to my third-year French composition courses. I think theyre just right for that level of student. ---- Professor Luke Bouvier, University of Massachusetts, AmherstI was a little skeptical when I ordered this book, and felt it would end up being just a list of words Id have to memorize. But is it an amazingly interesting book. --- reader reviewer, amazon. com This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback.
