Eddie Peabody is at the peak of his musical career, known to his many fans as the King of the Banjo. But after entertaining White House guests in the Rose Garden, he is summoned by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and asked to rejoin the armed forces. Secretly commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he continues performing in theaters across the country while training for his reconnaissance mission in Germany. Eddie photographs a newly constructed German U-boat, verifying the American government's suspicions. His mission complete, he troupes on to Berlin with the theater group. Unbeknown to the Allies, however, German intelligence has found a photograph of Eddie in his uniform. The head of the German state invites him to play at a private party for the chancellor and his entourage. Will this be Eddie's final performance?

From the Author:

Eddie Peabody, labeled "The King of the Banjo" by enthusiastic fans and the press, lived the show-business and naval experiences outlined in this novel. Much of what is known about this unique personality was derived from interviews with family members, personal letters, various published entertainment news articles, and other popular publications of the day. I want to personally recognize and thank Lowell H. Schreyer for his tireless research on Eddie's musical career, outlined in his 2000 publication, The Eddie Peabody Story.

From the Inside Flap:

He was feeling restless and achy when, quite suddenly, something alerted his senses. He began to discern a distant rumbling sound that he couldn't quite identify. He wasn't sure what the noise resembled, but it was too distant to worry about. My ears must be playing tricks. This country is an icebox! Gestapo goons everywhere and watching everyone -- just waiting to send you and your family . . . These bastards are planning for another war! Now the damned SS has been put on high alert -- arrested a Brit for spying last week, right here in Hamburg. Swell! And here I am with my four-string harp, trying to plunk out a few tunes, entertain the folks, and maybe put a smile on their faces. I wish someone would just tell me to get the hell out of this nest of vipers, and pronto! The rumbling of heavy equipment was now louder, and Eddie quickly realized that the noise he'd been hearing was real and getting closer.
"Dix, wake up!"
Bleary-eyed, she lifted her head. "What is it?"
"We've got to get the hell outta here, and fast. I think heavy trucks are moving into the area, maybe our neighborhood. And that, to me, means troops. They could be searching all the buildings in the area for anyone or anything they think is suspicious. Remember that Brit they caught nearby snooping around the docks last week? Charged the poor bastard with spying! Now let's get moving, girl!"
Dix was on her feet now. She grabbed the camera, and neither spoke as they quietly left the apartment.
