Clay Chapmans characters dont turn heads or perform dramatic feats of heroism. They arent highly educated or well-traveled. Their backgrounds and circumstances are unexceptional. Their stories, however, are anything but. Originating as a series of enthusiastically received monologues that this twenty-four-year-old author has performed around the country and abroad, Rest Area leads us into the minds of characters as real as they are original, and through a series of domestic horror stories that will leave readers breathless with amazement.

Clay McLeod Chapman first began writing plays at the age of twelve, when he won a playwriting contest in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Since then, he has developed a type of monologue that he both performs onstage and translates to the page. He has performed in Richmond, New York, San Francisco, and at the International Fringe Festival. He lives in Brooklyn, where he is at work on his first novel. From AudioFile:
Remember when you were a kid telling stories around the camp fire? There was an inviolate law that you had to make them as ridiculous as possible, in both the plot and the telling. Clay McLeod Chapman takes us back to that time of overwritten and way overperformed scary stories, opening with a tale of a father searching for his daughter in the same rest area from which she disappeared months earlier. Unfortunately, the stories and performance progress from the scary to the strange and bizarre, including plots involving incest among the handicapped and cannibal Boy Scouts. Recycling the same two or three vocal characters in each story, Chapman's performance renders the horrific embarrassing and funny, while his writing deteriorates to the downright sick.
