Reviews

K-Gr 2—A light introduction to the main aspects of weather. The work is broken down into four sections: "Wind and Rain," "Cold and Warmth," "Clouds and Light," and "More About the Weather." Each spread contains two large photographs accompanied by a short paragraph and a comprehension question for readers (a photograph of a collapsed house is paired with the question "What did the hurricane break?"). The text is accessible, concentrating on descriptions of each weather phenomenon and what children can expect before, during, and after. Humorous cartoon animal friends are superimposed on some of the photographs (for the spread on "Ice," the illustrated creatures are shown slipping and skating). The text is kid-friendly and allows students to ponder their own personal experience ("Dew" asks readers to spend a morning looking at dewy grass). The lack of page numbers, a table of contents, and an index, along with occasional unclear observations, such as "Hurricanes only appear in a few places on earth" (without a further explanation of where those "few" places are), limits this book's ability to be used as an informational source. VERDICT A general purchase for those looking for a lower-elementary introduction to weather.—Kristen Todd-Wurm, Middle Country Public Library, NY
