The book then introduces several aspects of Life Cycle Analysis followed by several methods to discern trajectories of nanomaterials in the environment with great precision and accuracy in trace amounts. It is extremely critical to assess the impact or potential impacts of compounds, products and processes on public health as a means to ascertain future sustainability. The book then present several chapters on applications relevant to sustainable future. As a chemist working on energy generation and conservation, I feel that the book is extremely relevant and will serve as a guide to forward thinking for many students, scientists and sustainability professionals. As correctly pointed out by the Editor and one of the Authors Dr. Vaseashta concepts of sustainability and Life Cycle Analysis are interconnected, yet challenging to delineate. In view of rapid technological advances, the topic presented in this book are more relevant and timely, as we depend on technology for future sustainability yet uncertainly about the life cycle of products poses "the Collingridge Dilemma". In his book titled Life-cycle analysis of Nanoparticles Risk, Assessment, and Sustainability , author and editor Dr. Ashok Vaseashta outlines essential background as to how technological innovations, such as progress on nanomaterials, provide pathways for sustainability. At the present, very little is known about the life-cycle of the products and their interaction with environment and human health. Nanomaterials have existed in nature before alchemy, indicating that human and nature have co-existed for a long time. Hence there is a component of perception of risk, in addition to some known risks associated with nanomaterials dispersion. To address these complex issues, the book starts out with a balanced view of sustainability by design, technical and social aspects of risks associated with nanomaterials and its association with sustainability. Clearly, understanding current adverse impacts can serve as an impetus for the development of alternatives which will avoid negative consequences. The chapters on enhanced monitoring data to authenticate LCA models will result in providing society with compounds, products and processes that have reduced associated hazards. The text starts with basic definitions of sustainability and outlines them in the framework of nanomaterials. It then presents basic lifecycle concept, such as assessment, characterization, and risk analysis as they relate to engineered nanomaterials and nanoparticles, with the goal of showing how these tools can contribute to viewpoint of nanomaterials based products as sustainable. Models, environmental fate and societal issues are also considered. Since sustainability is linked to design, the book describes how nanomaterials and their proper, i.e., ethical, use are viewed from a design perspective. Ever since nanotechnology was ushered in by recent innovations, several nexuses were immediately relevant: that between it and human health (nanopathology) and the environmental, and between nanotechnology and sustainability. Over better than the past decade, a tremendous number of consumer and industrial products have been introduced into the marketplace identified as emanating from nanotechnology. Also a significant emphasis on research on safety and risk concerns began almost immediately and have been proliferating at a fast pace. The social imperative of assessing the risk from nanotechnology required that life cycle assessment methods are used to estimate the safety or otherwise of nanoparticles that may be emitted to the environment from the manufacturing plants, from the products in their use phases, and after they end up as wastes at the end of their useful life. This book attempts to capture these issues in a volume contributed by several experts in these various fields of study. In a nutshell, nanotechnology has been already doing a lot of good and promises to do much more but what are the potential impacts on human health and the environment? The book s purpose is to provide a state-of-the-art treatise on tools and methods needed to determine potential downsides of nanoparticles. The various chapters reveal the tools we have at our disposal already and identify what research needs to be conducted to gain an adequate understanding so that in the future we can figure out ways and means of avoiding the potential downsides of exposure to nanoparticles and use nanoparticles safely in improving our living standards.
