Jim Douglas is a British sailor born to sail the seas. At eighteen years of age, he is already second mate.
When Jim he comes to serve under the nasty Captain Fisher of the steamer Pericles, that changes.
Captain Fisher is an ill-tempered brute, and his first mate is not much better. Together they terrorize the crew of the Pericles, an iron single screw steamer that carries nitrates, silver ore, hides and other trade items between Chilean ports and Liverpool, England. So when the Pericles reaches Valparaiso, Chile on January 7, 1879 -- Jim knows what he has to do.
