Dee loved lighthouses. A lighthouse is a beacon when you are in danger and a safe harbor in times of trouble. Mark once told her that there would be no place she could hide from him. He said, ""You can run, but you can’t hide. There are no lighthouses in Kentucky."" She was afraid for her life, and Kentucky was the only place Dee knew. Her divorce had only been final for two short weeks. The ride to Kentucky was lonely and tiresome, and the road had given her plenty of time to think. Dee relived her decision over and over in her head. Mark had been crazy during her last days with him, and the experience left her feeling scared and frightened. After all, she had left her children with him in exchange for her life. Now she needed to survive long enough to regain her children and her life.
