Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins first met at the Green Country Quilters Guild in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they both held up their hands and volunteered for jobs at their very first guild meetings. Their friendship grew as they worked together on many guild projects and through a shared love for quilting, and for applique in particular. They started Piece O' Cake Designs in 1994. Becky and Linda initially self-published their patterns and books but are now very happy members of the C&T Publishing family. They started Piece O' Cake Designs in 1994, as they were each moving away from Tulsa. Becky and her husband headed for Sherman, Texas, with their two sons. Linda and her husband, Paul, moved first to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, back to Tulsa in 2001, and finally to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 2008. Linda owned and managed a beauty salon before she started quilting. Over the years she developed a fine eye for color as a hair colorist and makeup artist. Becky took a liberal sprinkling of art classes while completing her interior design degree. They think that their varied backgrounds have combined well, making the quilts they design distinctive. Becky and Linda initially self-published their patterns and books but are now very happy members of the C&T Publishing family. Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins from Piece O' Cake Designs have done it again. In their latest book Applique with Attitude they bring us 10 projects featuring Big, Bold Stitches. Yes, no need to worry about anyone seeing your applique stitches with these projects―the stitching is intended to show! The method of applique used in the book is needle turn. However the big difference here is that you will be stitching the applique pieces down using Perle Cotton thread. The stitches with attitude used in the book are the Running Stitch, Mock Blanket Stitch and Serrated Edge Stitch. There is a comprehensive section on general applique instructions. This covers preparing background, making and using templates, making and using the positioning overlay, trimming the blocks and a special circle applique technique. Instructions are all clearly written and the close-up photos help a lot. Because you are working with larger stitches on the top of your applique piece there are a few steps you will need to take when stitching the outer and inner points. Both of these issues are addressed with the same easy to follow photos and instructions. The bright colored fabrics used throughout and the whimsical patterns make this a delightful read. (The Applique Society, September 2012)
Applique with Attitude is the great new book from Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins of Piece O' Cake Designs. Usually, the ladies are all about invisible stitches, but in this book they go to town on making a feature of their applique stitches with big bold stitches in thick threads. (Australian Quilters Companion, 12/1/12)
The dynamic duo behind the Piece O' Cake brand have experimented with a style of applique that is new to them in this collection of 10 projects. Instead of working with matching thread and tiny stitches to make their needleturn applique stitching virtually invisible, they decided to have a go working with large, bold stitches in colours that often contrast with the fabric. The projects they've included are all small - cushions, tea towels, wallhangings―so there's ample opportunity to choose one and give this method a whirl. In addition to a general overview of appliqueing the Piece O' Cake way, there are excellent instructions included on the big, bold approach featuring three different, highly visible stitches: running stitch, a mock blanket stitch and a serrated edge stitch variation. Each is shown in a series of close-up photographs with detailed notes and there's a special section that will help you build skills in appliqueing outer and inner points. Applique templates are provided full size on two tear-out pattern sheets inside the back cover. (Australian Homespun Magazine, 5/1/13)
