About the Author:

Michele Caniato is an active composer, conductor, and educator. He has been directing jazz ensembles since 1991 and is associate professor of music at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts.

Review:

A passionate and detailed study of quality literature for jazz ensemble. Helpful to jazz band directors and arrangers alike. Highly recommended ! (Frank L. Battisti, conductor emeritus, New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble)

Michele Caniato's observations into why some arrangements/compositions pass the survival test of history are indeed insightful. (Phil Wilson, trombonist, composer, and arranger)

A solid and concise guide for all jazz band directors to a more meaningful awareness of, understanding of, and approach to the large ensemble jazz canon. (Justin DiCioccio, performer, conductor, and educator)

Michele Caniato has carried out an impressive job! The wealth of information presented here, the detailed analyses of essential big band repertoire, and tips for rehearsing the ensemble make this book a must for all jazz educators, band directors, arrangers and composers. (Jere Laukkanen, composer, arranger, conductor, and head of the degree program in pop and jazz music, Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied S)

A compelling approach in the world of jazz education: thoughtful, highly intelligent, insightful. I recommend this publication to educators and musicians alike. (Michael Abene, Grammy Award-winning composer/arranger and music director of the WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany)

Michele Caniato's book is sure to serve as an invaluable resource for directors seeking guidance and new ideas to enhance the quality of their jazz ensemble's repertoire and performance. Check it out! (Chuck Owen, professor of jazz studies, University of South Florida-Tampa)

Jazz ensemble directors searching for new material will find plenty of possibilities here. (Teaching Music, August 2010)
