From the Preface of this 42 page book: "This is a book about the Erie Railroad's influence on Kent, Ohio. It is not about the greater Erie Railroad, nor is it about Kent's other two railroads (the Baltimore and Ohio and the Wheeling and Lake Erie) and their impact on the town. These railroads are also worthy subjects for consideration, but their influence on Kent has not been nearly as profound as that of the Erie. In Kent's history, the Erie Railroad was, and remains, something special. The photographs in this book are from a variety of sources. Some have been published before, some only rarely, and some are seen here for the first time. The Kent of today is a much cleaner and quieter town than the one depicted in these photographs. But to the writer, it isn't quite as interesting as when it was a railroad town in every sense of the word." And from the rear cover: "Railroads and trains have interested Bruce Dzeda all his life. Born in Cleveland just a few houses away from the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad, Bruce spent his childhood in East Cleveland in a house next door to the double track mainline of the Nickel Plate Railroad, where the daily parade of magnificent steam locomotives and shiny passenger trains captured his attention and affection. He later moved to Kent to study at Kent State University, where he earned both his B.S.Ed. and M.A. degrees. Bruce's interest in the Erie and Baltimore and Ohio railroads stems from that time. When not riding a train to someplace, Bruce can be found riding his bicycle on trails that were once train tracks, reading aloud or talking about railroads or, in his pensive moments, thinking about them."
